The ICRC in Yemen

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been active in Yemen since 1962, providing neutral and impartial humanitarian assistance through multiple periods of conflict and crisis. In partnership with the Yemen Red Crescent Society, the ICRC continues to support people affected by violence, displacement, and economic collapse. Their work spans emergency medical care, water and sanitation, food security, livelihoods support, protection of detainees, and the restoration of family links.

As the humanitarian situation remains dire, the ICRC has scaled up its efforts across the country, responding to both immediate needs and longer-term challenges.

The impact of their work in 2024/2025:

  • Supported 43 health facilities, enabling 515,710 medical consultations across Yemen.
  • Delivered food parcels and essential items to 74,354 people, and reached 169,981 individuals with economic support such as cash grants, livelihood tools, and livestock care.
  • Repaired and maintained water systems, improving clean water access for 374,164 people directly, and over 1.5 million people indirectly.
  • Carried out 10 in-depth detention visits and helped facilitate the release of 153 detainees in Sana’a in January 2025, ensuring humane treatment and family contact.
  • Helped 3,179 people restore contact with relatives through its Restoring Family Links programme, and clarified the fate of missing persons in 5 cases.
  • Provided mine risk education to 3,374 people living in areas affected by explosive remnants of war.
  • Donated supplies and supported health and sanitation facilities in conflict-affected areas to ensure continuity of care and essential services.
